NT Wright Suggestions on How to Read the Bible
Why Read the Bible in 2012?
"Worship, preaching, and the various programs of Christian education continue to feed our people. Many people in our congregations have a heart to encourage others to grow in their Christian faith and to engage in personal discipleship. However, studies of discipleship in the mainline church and American culture tell us that our fruitfulness in growing disciples is diminishing." Dr. Stan Ott
Stephen Prothero’s fascinating book Religious Literacy – What Every American Needs to Know and Doesn’t quotes historian R. Laurence Moore who wrote, "Americans are stupefyingly dumb about what they are supposed to believe."
- Fewer than half of us can identify Genesis as the first book of the Bible.
- Only one third know that Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount.
- A majority of Americans believe that the Bible says that Jesus was born in Jerusalem.
- When asked whether the New Testament Book of Acts is in the Old Testament, one quarter of Americans say yes. More than a third say they don’t know.
- Most Americans don’t know that Jonah is a book in the Bible.
- 20% of Americans believed that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife.
- 60% of Americans can’t name five of the Ten Commandments.
- Only 50% can name one of the four gospels.
- 50% of high school seniors think Sodom and Gomorrah were married.
- 75% believe the Bible teaches, "God helps those who help themselves."
This year we at Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church are striving to overcome and change the course of this disheartening trend among Americans. If you want to join our challenge and commit to reading the Bible through in 2012, please watch the video and download the reading plan. Even if you were not able to join us at the beginning, we welcome you to jump in at any point. And be sure to join one of the many small groups that are discussing the readings every week. We look forward to our journey ahead this coming year.
