The Importance of Becoming a Member of a Congregation
The Christian life and the Christian Church go together. It is important for a Christian, or a person who wants to become a Christian, to become a part of a congregation for several reasons:
The Christian Family is Communal
We do not come to faith in the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ alone, and faith cannot be kept alive alone. Faith in God inevitably leads to membership in the church – “the People of God"
You need a Community
The church encourages us in our Christian pilgrimage, challenges us to grow as Christians, and offers us a place to serve God.
The Community needs you
The church has a need for you to be a part of the worshipping community, to share your faith with others, to join others in serving God, and to be a part of a group whose influence, witness, and service reaches out to all the world.
How to Decide About Becoming a Member
It is not always easy to decide to join a congregation, but there are at least five things you can do to help make the decision:
Pray about the decision
The church is the people of God, and prayer is most important in deciding about joining a particular congregation.
Worship with the Congregation
Worship is the heart of the life of the church. If the worship services help you express your faith, have meaning for your life, and meet your needs, then that may be a sign that this is the congregation you should join.
Participate in some group in the church
The Sunday bulletin lists the Calendar of Events for the week:
attend a Church School class, sing in one of the choirs, attend a fellowship event. You will have an opportunity to meet people on a less formal basis and make friends among the members.
Attend the Adult Membership Class
Elders lead these classes that meet two Sundays at 9:30 A.M. You will learn specifics about the work of this church and meet some of the leaders. The classes are designed to help you make an intelligent decision about membership in the congregation. You may call the church office at 671- 4173 to find out when the next class meets. .
Talk to the Pastor an Elder or a Member
Anyone in the congregation will be glad to answer questions about the church, give impressions about the life of the congregation, or help you in any way possible to get to know the congregation better.
Becoming a Member of the Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church
The Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church (USA) welcomes as members all who believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and wish to become a part of this family of believers. You can become a member by meeting with 'the Session (the governing body of the local church that is made up of Elders elected by the Congregation), and asking to be received into the fellowship of the church. We encourage you to attend our orientation classes so you may become familiar with our church. These meet approximately every three months; please check the church calendar for details or speak to one of the pastors.
Membership may be requested in one of the following ways:
| 1. |
You may be a member of another church from which a certificate transferring you to this church can be requested. The Pastor will be glad to write for this Certificate of Transfer, if you tell him the name and address of the church of which you are now a member.
|
| 2. |
You may be a member of a church that does not give a Certificate of Transfer to another congregation except a congregation of the same denomination, or you' may have been a member long ago and believe that you are no longer on the roll of that church. In this case, you can be received as a member of Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church by "Reaffirmation of Faith." This means that you say to the Session, "I was a member of church. I believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord just as I did when I became a member there. I would like to become a member of Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church". |
| 3. |
It may be that you have never been a member of a church. In this case, you would join Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church on "Profession of Faith in Jesus Christ”. |
If you were not baptized as a child, you would be baptized at the time you make profession of your faith. The Pastors or any of the Elders in the church would be glad to discuss your faith in Christ with you, and help you know how to begin the Christian pilgrimage.
